Benevolence is an important function of the Association. Every year we make Grants to individuals. The QARANC Association Benevolent Fund awards financial grants to purchase specific goods, services or facilities for serving and retired members of the Corps, or their dependants, who are in need.

Application for Grants

Applications for grants are made predominantly through SSAFA and The Royal British Legion who have trained volunteer Caseworkers. The method of application is now standardised among the Service charities which makes the process of assessing and awarding grants more efficient. The grants are paid to these agencies for disbursement on behalf of the Association.

Please Note:  The Association is unable to pay legal fees in relation to any Benevolence or Grants.

Criteria for the award of a grant

  • You are in need or distress
  • You need financial assistance from the QARANC Association to help you achieve a reasonable quality of life

How to apply

All cases must come to QARANC Association via local Caseworkers, this applies to serving and retired personnel. Caseworkers may represent a variety of service organisations that may include The Royal British legion (TRBL), Poppy Scotland, Soldiers, Sailors Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) and The Officers' Association.

The QARANC Association are unable to consider any direct requests from individuals, welfare officers etc. If a serving individual has a temporary cash flow problem or encounters a difficulty his Unit Chain of Command should assist as this is not a benevolence matter. Long term cases in need are more complex and may require intervention and referral to other organisations.

Officers should be advised to contact the Officers Association in the first instance and they will be advised individually. There are Caseworkers in every part of the country and a contact number should be held in the Unit or HQ. They can also be found in many civilian organisations and a number is listed at the end of this page.

A Caseworker will be allocated and will visit you at your convenience to discuss your case. They will need to take some detailed information from you in order to assess how you can best be helped. This will include financial information, housing and family circumstances which they will enter onto a Form A (this document is key and without it we are unable to proceed). It is most important that you provide as much detail as possible however difficult, as the end result is to provide you with as much assistance as possible in order for you to continue looking after yourself and your family independently. This information is confidential (it will not be shared with your Chain of Command under any circumstances) and when completed it is passed to the organisation that will deal with it which may include the QARANC Association.

On receipt a case file is set up and a case report completed by the Benevolence Manager. This can be done within 24 hours provided all the information is provided which is why the detail given to the Caseworker is vital. The case is then placed before the Association Committee, a mix of serving and retired officers and soldiers, and the committee meet every month.  If approved, a cheque will be issued to the organisation representing you and will be administered by them.  The grant can only be used for the specific purpose of the request and will not be made payable to the individual.  Your case may also be passed to other organisations that could help.

If mobility equipment is required then it will be necessary in all cases to have a full occupational therapy assessment and supporting report. This is to ensure that the correct piece of equipment designed to meet your specific needs is purchased.

The committee has a guide criterion which is flexible but as it is a charity it does not include the repayment of any sort of debt nor can it provide loans.

The Association is also unable to fund services or items that are available through statutory bodies such as the National Health Service.

Contact one of the Associations below for help who will arrange for a caseworker to visit and help you to complete an application form.

Welcome to Aldershot

The Aldershot Branch is unique in that it brings the serving soldiers from the Joint Hospital Group (South East) at Frimley Park Hospital together with the retired members where both groups are able to share stories past and present.

The QARANC Association was founded in 1947 by Dame Louisa Wilkinson DBE RRC. The Association was able to support the many thousands of members of the QAIMNS who were leaving the Service after the Second World War, having shared experiences their civilian colleagues would not have done. This continues today through Headquarters and branches countrywide.

The Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC) nurses have worked at the sharp end of military life throughout the last century of military nursing.

  • FrontInside1Inspire the future of the Association, join a network of serving and retired QARANC personnel who support the Association in maintaining the ethos and traditions of the Corps as well as raising its profile.
  • Join one of our branches nationwide and reconnect with friends, colleagues, older members and generate new friendships.
  • Enjoy social events and get involved. All members contribute to the Association's funds and fundraising activities within the branches is encouraged.
  • Receive free copies of our twice yearly Gazette which keeps members abreast of current activities in the Corps. All members, past or present are especially encouraged to contribute articles of interest.
  • Take part in ceremonial events, e.g. by application to the Association for tickets to the Field of Remembrance or the Cenotaph ceremony in London

How to Join

It's easy! Join online using the form below, completing as many of the fields as accurately as you can. Payment will be via Direct Debit and once accepted we will send you a membership pack.

Please note that Regular serving personnel cannot join online, they are to ensure that they have completed the ‘payroll giving’ form available from the Regimental Secretary.

Late in 2013, the QARANC Association was approached by a relative of Kathleen Jenkins who served for 5 years in Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) during the Second World War. Her family advised the Association that they had been given an opportunity to acquire Kathleen's medals which had been awarded in recognition of her military nursing service. With support and advice from the Association, the medals became the property of her family who recently expressed a wish that these much treasured collection together with the story of her remarkable service as a military nurse, should be shared with those who have an interest in military nursing.

The QARANC Association is managed by a Board of Trustees who meet on a regular basis. The General Secretary of the Association, who is also the Regimental Secretary QARANC, carries out the routine day to day administration of the Charity. The Association is bound by its governing document, the 'Constitution', and must ensure compliance with the relevant statutory and regulatory frameworks including the need to demonstrate financial propriety.
